Slipped Upper Femoral Epiphysis

Also called a SUFE is a condition involving the hip joint. With a SUFE, the growth plate at the top of the thigh bone is weak and the head of the femur slips downward and backward.

A Slipped Upper Femoral Epiphysis is not usually associated with injury although can be..

Symptoms often develop slowly and may seem like a pulled muscle in the hip, thigh or knee, limp, limited movement of the hip joint, possible shortening of the effected leg.

EARLY DIAGNOSIS is essential as most children require surgery ASAP to correct the slip and prevent further damage of the hip joint.

If your child presents with any of the above symptoms seek an urgent assessment from an appropriate health professional ASAP.

Physiotherapy assessment will be able to assess whether your child has a possible SUFE and advise on appropriate action.
